Rooted in the revolutionary spirit of 1960s San Francisco, Epicenter will showcase the rich history of rock posters and political printmaking via original works of art, examples of hand lettering, and printing-process materials.
Epicenter will open by honoring the “The Big Six” of poster art who defined the look of the counterculture—Alton Kelley, Wes Wilson, Bonnie MacLean, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse, and Rick Griffin. Importantly, as the space will feature rotating poster art exhibits, the Center will expand upon their pioneering legacies by restoring the contributions of women, queer artists, and creators of color to their rightful places in both history and contemporary culture.
With regularly rotating exhibitions, Epicenter will continue to inspire community and contribute to the scholarship related to the artist communities that still drive this analog artform. Such efforts come full circle in the Center’s perpetually active print studio, where we build upon the traditions on view in Epicenter by producing limited-edition, hand-pulled screen prints.
