The Matrix and the Handbills of the Haight: Recent Acquisitions

Haight Street Art Center recently received an exciting donation of a collection of handbills and postcards documenting the psychedelic era in San Francisco, the greater Bay Area, and Denver. One cache of handbills documents the Matrix, the Marina district folk club cofounded by the Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin in 1965. Although the Matrix sponsored and was commemorated by posters, handbills were its principal means of advertising concerts, and six of those will be on display on the Art Center’s first floor through August1st, along with a selection of handbills showing how the psychedelic art of the Haight-Ashbury spread to the East Bay, North Bay, and South Bay, and across America.

Melodic Virtue and Haight Street Art Center, along with partner Amoeba Music, are delighted to announce an exclusive book signing for The Residents: A Sight for Sore Eyes, Vol.1 with Homer Flynn, creative director of Poor? NO! Graphics, and Aaron Tanner.

Fans can purchase copies of the book, have it signed by Flynn and Tanner, and tour an exhibition curated by Flynn of rare Residents posters from their half-century history. In keeping with the Center’s mission to honor the city’s rich history of poster art, the event will be commemorated by a new poster, designed by noted Bay Area artist Zoltron, which will be available for sale.

Haight Street Art Center invites you to join us this Saturday, April 30th from 12-6pm with artist Rob Corradetti for a Killer Acid Pop-Up Show.  Posters and wearable delights will be for sale. 

Killer Acid is the work of artist Rob Corradetti. Located in Santa Cruz, CA, the brand specializes in screen prints, T-shirts, and a myriad of mysterious, humorous, and highly-detailed psychedelic ephemera.

Canablis: Celebrating Cannabis and Head Shop Culture in San Francisco.

The Head shops of the 60’s and 70’s were stores that specialized in all things cannabis. From bongs, pipes and papers, to posters, records, incense and the like; head shops acted as emporiums for communities of counter culturalists. Whether as concert ticket sales venues, distribution locales for underground literature, or meeting places for activist groups like the Diggers, San Francisco head shops played an important and influencing role in the culture of the time–where free love, drugs, and psychedelic music reigned supreme.

Bio

Joyce Hsu is an interdisciplinary artist and designer with background in both art and architecture. She received her Master of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute and her Master of Architecture at California College of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally.
